The Book Thief

In 1939, there was a little girl with her family on a train in Germany. It was not until death took her brother's life away that started her journey. That little girl's name was Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nelisse.) When her mother wasn't able to take care of her, Liesel was put into the hands of the Hubermanns. Rosa Hubermann (Emily Watson) was not the nicest woman, but knew how to show her power. As for Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush), he was the papa Liesel wanted. Viewers can see the death that partakes all around the neighborhood during this dark time, but that didn't stop Liesel from doing what she wanted to do: read. If she wasn't reading, she was playing with her friend, Rudy Steiner (Nico Liersch.) The question was how was she getting the books when Hitler didn't want anything that didn't pertain to him in households? This movie will definitely tug on viewers' heartstrings on what awaits for them. A very amazing movie.

*Rated PG-13 for some violence and intense thematic material.

My Rating: A

I did read the book, so I will give a little bit more of a personal input. If you have not watched the movie or read the book, I suggest you stop right here and either get the movie or book, because this will contain a little bit of spoilers.

The movie did wonders with the narrator. When the narrator is death, it can be a little bit interesting. By the way the movie progressed just from the beginning, I knew it would somewhat follow the book, but seeing that it's based off of a book, the movie would not contain all the details, but it was still very good. The movie kept the plot line very detailed as it was in the book. Yes. There were moments that I did not imagine as it was in the movie, but it was captured very well especially the characters. Liesel, Rudy, Hans, Max. Everyone was phenomenal. Not only that, the movie captured a lot of the essence of what was going on. Not just in Liesel's life, but all around Germany like Kristallnact. That was captivating. I think this is one of the movies that does the book justice.

My Rating: A+
