In this intense movie, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who is going on a small expedition. Who would have known that he would have been mauled by a bear though? Let me tell you about the gory-ness and craziness that goes in this movie. Parents, if you want your children to watch this movie, I am telling you now, you better watch out, because when Glass is being mauled by a mama bear, he literally is being mauled. Viewers are able to see the nails dig into his skin, and I don't even want to mention when the bear gets on top of him and just starts scratching the ever-living life out of him. So the movie is as it seems. Glass is on a survival trip to find his men, but after seeing one of his men kill his son, he has a reason to keep on moving. Especially out in the blistering cold where it's snowing and not to mention the Indian tribes that get a little territorial if you step even an inch in their land. Viewers get to see Glass suffer, relive, and even take shelter in a horse. The journey that he goes through just keeps viewers on the edge of their seat knowing that something is coming after him. The only thing I can criticize and it's not that bad is the camera work. It either is with the actors or against them, and what I mean by that is either it's following the actors around (not shakily, which is impressive) or it's right against their face that viewers can see their breath in the ice cold snow. It's not a detriment to the movie. It just can get a little annoying with the lack of consistency. All in all, it is a good movie. Just watch out for bears or angry Indians.
*Rated R for strong frontier combat and violence including gory images, language, a sexual assault, and brief nudity.
