It wasn't too long ago that I was first introduced to Hayao Miyazaki's work, and there wasn't one movie that I have not liked. That is until I saw this movie. It's kind of more gross than bad though. I hate bugs. Let me just get that out there. They're gross and if it's close to resembling a cockroach, I will freak out. This movie definitely did that to me, and I won't be surprised if I have the creepy crawlies soon.
Anyways, in this insect infested movie, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind kind of reminded me of another one of Miyazaki's works, Mononoke except backwards. If you get what I mean. Nausicaa (voiced by Sumi Shimamoto) is the princess of the Valley of the Wind, and she's a special princess: She can calm things down like, I don't know, ginormous looking bugs called Ohms. It wasn't until that she was held hostage by Kushana (voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara) and her army that she knew everything isn't solved by violence. Kushana was wanting to take over the nearby villages to get rid of the Sea of Decay, which is what the Earth is now ever since the insects took over the world. With music that sounds like it comes from a video game, this movie sucks up viewers, and I don't mean to make these puns. I think the creepy crawlies has gotten to me. I definitely liked the scenery though. There were moments where it was so detailed that sometimes I didn't know if Nausicaa was wearing pants or not. Oh and let's not forget about the Giant Warrior. Let's put that in the mix too. It's this movie that definitely tells viewers that violence is not the answer.
*Rated PG for violence.
