I think I mentioned before that the theme of many movies as of lately come from books, and not just from books in general, but the post-apocalyptic ones like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and many others.
In the 5th Wave, Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz) was your normal teenager. Going to school, admiring cute guys from afar, and taking care of her brother seemed like her top priorities. It wasn't until aliens came to the Earth and placed destruction everywhere that made her realign her priorities. It then took form of taking care of her brother, getting food, water, and shelter. At the same time, not die from the different waves of destruction the aliens have been placing on the planet. With waves varying from earthquakes to floods to the bird flu,the last wave was the most destructive: putting the last survivors against each other. The movie wasn't that bad, but when you have been watching the latest movies, you tend to realize there's elements when it comes to post-apocalyptic movies. There's the enemies, which in this case were the aliens named the Others. There's the sense of sanctuary. In this movie, it was getting to the base where her brother was or her brother in general. And let's not forget, since the main character is a female, a smoking hot guy for her to ponder on if she wants to be with him or not. I didn't mind these elements, but it got a little predictable as the movie went on. It was a good movie in general though. It definitely made me want to read the book. I just have a feeling there's going to be a second installment. Isn't that what's been happening lately?
*Rated PG-13 for violence and destruction, some sci-fi thematic elements, language and brief teen partying.
