The Prodigy

Imagine having someone else invade your body and take full control of it.
This is exactly what happens in the Prodigy.

Sarah Bloom (Taylor Schilling) is a mother that just wants the best for
her son, Miles (Jackson Robert Scott). The thing was she knew he was
special the moment he was born. He was growing abnormally fast and is
smarter than his peers. The strangest manner was that he would not
communicate with the other children. Not to mention odd occurrences
were happening such as the dog not liking him, and most of the time
animals love children. Sarah had to do something.

What I really liked about this movie is that even though it is a thriller,
the suspense factor was high on the creepy factor. It was on par with
the pop up scares. Every time some scary scene would come up the
anticipation would not only kill me but someone else in the movie.
One of the disadvantages of this movie was it started out in a rush.
Viewers saw Sarah was pregnant and the dad was nervous. There was
not much connection with the characters at all either. I feel like there’s
got to be some sort of connection with the main characters and the
viewers. With Sarah, I didn’t really have a connection with her until the
movie was 30 minutes in because when the movie begins, we just see
that she’s going to be a parent and that was it. It was the same thing
with Miles and the husband and viewers don’t see Miles until he’s two
years old.

Later in the movie, viewers learn that someone else was in Miles’ body
and it was a gentleman who in his past lifetime was a murderer. They
explain who took over Miles’ body but they didn’t really expand why his
body. It was also the how the hypnotist got hypnotized by the boy that
made the ordeal seem trippy. Sarah quickly caught on that something
was wrong when she caught Miles talking in his sleep one night talking
Hungarian. It was also those moments that made me wonder when she
was going to catch on and not wait until he had beaten up one of his
classmates.

Since I’m a huge horror fan and I’ve seen my good portion of
psychological thrillers, this one didn’t blow my mind away. The few pop up
scares that got me good, but I felt like it was watching the trailer. The
trailer gave so much away that I wasn’t surprised when things started
going haywire.

With an ending that no one saw coming, The Prodigy isn’t that bad. Since
Sarah didn’t know what to do with the man that was inhabiting her son’s
body, she knew she only had a couple alternatives. Sending him to talk to
a specialist didn’t help much except figuring out who had taken over
Miles. The other alternative was killing him herself even though that was
the last thing on her mind.

I love how the producers used the innocence of a child and did a twist
that kind of got viewers thinking they’re watching the Exorcist. Having
to kill the dog wasn’t necessary but I feel like producers placed that in
the movie to prove a point about the person that was in the boy’s body.
Plot holes were present as well since they didn’t go deep into what
happened to Miles’ except the fact that he was vulnerable at the
moment his body was taken over. When Miles was taken over by the
murderer, it was when he was in the car with his mom and all of a
sudden he asks if she’ll still love her even with the things he does. I
didn’t fully understand why that was the time he decided to take over
Miles. Another plot hole was the father figure. He decided to go in and
out of the story since he didn’t want to deal with the issue and leave
Sarah to try and figure out what was wrong with their son.

This is a movie to watch if you’re ready for that psychological thrill.
Just be warned there is going to be some language content as well as the
pop up scares that make the movie rated R for a reason. For me, it was a
good scary movie but could have been a little slowed down and had a little
more depth.

*Rated R for language, intense scenes, pop-up scares
