Hey guys, how's your Monday going? It's been a pretty chill day. I've been kind of putting off this movie review but since it is movie day, Movie of the Night: Mulan!
Hua Mulan (played by Yifei Liu) has always been told to know her place, keep her chi in check, and live the life of a woman in China. It wasn't until the Rourans started taking over the country that one man from every family must join the army to take them down. Injured from the previous war, Hua Zhou (played by Tzi Ma) knew he had to go to defend his country, but Mulan's devotion for her family took his place as Hua Jun. Deep down though, she knew she wasn't being true to herself.
I kept putting off this movie for a good reason. I tried keeping the animated version out of my head as I was watching this but I just couldn't help but think how bad the movie was. On it's own, it was okay. But coming from Disney, you would expect a little bit more. For the first time in forever, a Disney movie did not have singing in it. It had instrumentals of the original songs in the background during the movie but it wasn't the same. There was also a little bit more of a back story which wasn't too bad but it just involved too many changes in the story. Instead of a Mushu, there was a phoenix in place of him as the guide. It was pretty awesome though seeing Jet Li play the Emperor. All in all, not your best remake Disney.
*Rated PG-13 for violence
My Rating: C
