Uglies

Hey guys! How's it going? Happy October! Even though it's October, Vegas is still in the triple digits and I'm getting tired of it but hopefully it'll cool off soon. Anyways, this bad boy came out not too long ago so I had to watch it. Movie of the Night from the other night: Uglies!

All Tally Youngblood (played by Joey King) wants is to be Pretty. In her world, adolescents who turn 16 undergo a surgery which turns them into a Pretty but for the time being, she's going through life as an Ugly and it's not bad but it's not great. When her best friend goes through the surgery and leaves her behind for the two months left until her surgery, Tally meets Shay (played by Brianne Tju) who doesn't even want to be a Pretty. She'd rather go to the Smoke which is an urban myth to most but tries to convince Tally to come, but Tally can't betray her new friend especially for something she has been looking forward to her entire life. Can she?

The Millenial in me was screaming when I saw this was coming to Netflix, and I jumped on it faster than I grabbed the book when I was a teenager. So you can imagine the bias I had while watching this movie, but despite contrasting reviews, I didn't mind this movie. At first, it was following the book almost to the page until the end. It's always at the end of the movie where things change when a movie is based off a book, but I'm not complaining too much. It just wasn't as invigorating as I thought. There was a moment where Peris (played by Chase Stokes) isn't even supposed to be involved when Tally is in the Smoke, but I can see where this movie can lose a viewer. It can either be from the classifications of the Uglies, Pretties, and Specials or the dystopian world. If this sounds like your speed, check it out on Netflix but if you're going to be turned off just by the fact it's coming from a 16-year-old's perspective, then go towards the spooky films that are also on Netflix.

*Rated PG-13 for language, intense scenes, violence and gore

My Rating: C
