Hey guys! How's it going? I don't know about you, but today felt extra Monday-like. Maybe it's because of the change of seasons and the change of pace. I don't know. Anyways, I know I have been on Netflix movies for a while and not everyone has it, but I think some of their original movies are pretty interesting including this one. So without further ado, Movie of the Night from last night: Leave the World Behind!
In this thriller/suspense, the Sandfords are going away for vacation and where else besides out in the middle of the woods where the nearest person is a drive away? Amanda Sandford (played by Julia Roberts) is your tech savvy mother who just wants to disconnect and not just from technology but from people in general and her husband, Clay (played by Ethan Hawke), doesn't mind it one bit, but when the owner of the house comes back to stay the night because there was a blackout, something seems off to Amanda. When it turns out it was something more to the blackout, Amanda does everything and anything to make sure her family is safe and secure and if that means not being in the same house as G.H Scott (played by Mahershala Ali), the owner, and his daughter then so be it, but what happens when there are terrorists hacking the country and making it impossible to leave the island? The Sandfords and the Scotts are going to have to work together to make sure the chaos is somewhat organized.
I just got the new Hunger Games book, so I have been on an adventure when it comes to dystopian stories in general, but this movie seemed a little different when it came to the doomsday genre. Since the setting is basically in modern times with the electronic cars and mobile devices, it was interesting to see how people would react when something like this does happen. I totally forgot about the self driving aspect when it came to Teslas, so when Amanda was looking for a way off the island and a bunch of Tesla's were trying to go back to the dealership, it was interesting to see them all bunched up. But besides that, I thought this was an interesting take in general when the world does seem to end. Not everyone will have the same priorities especially when there are kids involved especially like Rosie (played by Farrah Mackenzie) who is trying to finish Friends which by the way seemed a little strange to me since technology does go out the window when the world ends. But other than that, it was a fascinating movie to watch and I know some of the Netflix originals have been hits or misses but this one is a hit. Kind of. Maybe not that action packed as A Quiet Place or the Hunger Games, but it definitely had me interested to see what was going to happen next. Not a lot happens but the drama is there especially when it comes to everyone trying to cope in their own ways. Anyways, if you are on Netflix and wanting something a little fictional from the real world, give this one a try. You may just like it.
*Rated R for language, drug use, some sexual content and brief bloody images
